EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY OF JK

If there is to be any kind of social change, there must be a different kind of education so that children are not brought up to conform.

                                                            - from the book Beyond Violence.

BASIC EDUCATION THOUGHTS OF J KRISHNAMOORTHY

  • Knowledge or education are conditioning factors of thinking
  • Knowledge makes man either conform to it or differ from it. In both the cases, it limits further thinking.
  • Education like any other effort to make a whole man, should strive for inner peace and hence bliss.
  • Learning has been the ancient tradition of man not only from books but from other sources like nature and the psychology of human being.
  • As this has been neglected entirely, there is disorder in the world;terror, violence and all other cruel things are taking place.
  • To learn, listening and reading alone are not sufficient, as they will result only in indoctrination; Instead of thinking independently, become slaves of others thinking.
  • The purpose of education is to cultivate right relationship, not only between individuals, but also between the individual and society; and that is why it is essential that education should, above all, help the individual to understand his own psychological process.

NATIONALISM

Meaning of Nationalism

  •     Nationalism means identification with one's own nation and support for its intrests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the intrest of other nations.
  • Advocacy or support for political independence of a particular nation or people

Definition of Nationalism

Naionalism is an ideology that emphasizes loyalty, devotion to a nation and a sense of national consciousness placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interest.  A country may have people speaking different languages, follow diffeent religions, have different culture and still if they have a feeling that they belong to one nation, then they are nationlists.

Say, the conviction that,"all of us are Indians. India is my country" is an example for nationalism.

A good nationalism has to depend on a principle of the common people, on myths of a struggling commonality.

-Andrew O'Hagan

J.K.'s Views on Nationalism

  • J.K. was opposed to nationalism as he thought it divided human beings
  • He said " the feeling my country and your country creates conflicts and war.  We are all responsible for this kind of narrow attachment."
  • He believed that the world is ours, we are all human beings living together;
  • Nationalism always produces war, and the problem is not to be solved by bringing about further nationalism, which ia only an avoidance of the fact and an extension of the same poison, but by being free of nationalism, of the sense of belonging to a particular group, to a particular class of society.
  • Nationalism is a tribal instinct ; we should rise above this and observe the human beings in us and see life as one single movement wihtout an end.
  • Nationalism, the patriotic spirt, class and race consciousness are alwaysof the self and therefore separative.
